Vera and Mara Mednis

Mednis Enterprises is a big name for our small company. The business includes Vera and Mara Mednis, a mother and daughter team. Our roots lie in ethnic Latvian weaving. Though we still dabble with weaving, we have also branched out into producing beautiful quilts with one of a kind, free hand machine quilting, and creating beautiful, intricate beaded jewelry and decorations. Our artistic skills have been recognized on many fronts. Vera was a featured artist for the Wisconsin Arts Council at the 1998 Smithsonian Folk Life Festival in Washington, DC, and at the Wisconsin Sesquicentennial Celebration in Madison, WI. In 2000, the Wisconsin Arts Council sent us to Chiba, Japan as part of a cultural exchange program.

Our quilting awards include: 2006-Best of Show-Great Rivers Folk Festival, Lacrosse, WI; 1999-1st and 3rd Place, and Viewer’s Choice-Fort McCoy Quilt Show, Fort McCoy, WI; 1999-1st Place, 2nd Place, 2nd Place, 4th Place, 5th Place-Cranfest Quilt Show, Warrens, WI. Cranfest awards have also included Best of Class and Most Original. An original design of Mara’s jewelry won the Honorable Mention Award at the 2010 Madison Art Glass and Bead Show. Vera and Mara have been regular attendees at the Great Rivers Traditional Arts Festival in LaCrosse, Art in the Park in Mill Bluff, and Art Fair on the Green in LaCrosse. They are now proud members of the Tomah Art Gallery.
